Kitchen Sink to Catwalk: International Women's Day Special

International Women’s Day on the 8th March is a worldwide event that celebrates women's achievements – from the political to the social – while calling for gender equality. This year, International Women’s Day comes on the heels of unprecedented global movement for women’s rights, equality, and justice.

To mark this momentum occasion, Together will be showing a marathon of Kitchen Sink to Catwalk episodes to show why it is never too late to follow your dreams. A fun reality contest with a difference, the programme follows six middle-aged women who have travelled to London to take part in one of the biggest challenges of their lives.

During the course of the series, Karen Seeberg, 45, Christine Reed, 47, Micki Baxter, 53, Sam Hughes, 44, Jazmine Labana, 44, and Angie Drake, 52, compete to win a feature spread in a fashion magazine and a professional modelling contract with Model 1.

Baxter, a former web administrator, said the experience had given her more confidence and a positive outlook on life.

“I used to get countless emails from models, their mothers, and especially from girls over 30. Every single one of them admired the fact that I was older and had a brilliant portfolio having worked with high profile photographers. I worked really, really hard to achieve all that and it was so touching to have so many people ask for advice for themselves or their daughters. Several of the girls who were in their 30's and early 40's stopped lying about their ages (after I urged them to) and ended up getting more work and respect. Even today, with my low profile approach to modelling, I still get emails from mature women who say my portfolio has inspired them to try."

Now retired, Baxter said she admired Daphne Selfe, who at the age of 89 is the 'world’s oldest supermodel.'

“I have noticed a trend in the past 10 years where they are using more mature women for advertising. I even noticed that Avon started using mature and even elderly women in their brochures, which a giant step in the right direction. I think every time older women are shown in the media as lively, beautiful, young at heart and marketable, it gives a message to women everywhere that you are never too old to follow your dreams, and that age is just a number. I was so glad to see the absolute outrage over Julia Roberts being heavily airbrushed in the L'Oréal ad campaign. Wrinkles are natural and I feel like I have earned my mature face and body. “
