The first project on the DIY Challenge is this stunning planter.

We’ll give you a week to gather all the materials you need, then we’ll send you Dave Wellman’s tutorial. You can download the list to your phone or take a screenshot. We’d recommend sticking it to your fridge or near your recycling bin to remind yourself to save any jars that could be useful.

Materials list:

2 scrap timber pieces 100 mm (wide) x 20 mm (thick) @ 300 mm (long)
2 scrap timber pieces 100 mm (wide) x 20 mm (thick) @ 400 mm (long)
6 pieces of jute string each 100 centimetres long
 8 Screws
 3 Old Jars

For tools, you'll need:

 Sand paper
Electric saw or a hand saw
 A drill
 A screwdriver (ideally electric)

It's always handy to have:

 A pencil (and sharpener!)
 Scissors
 Goggles
 Tape measure

TIP:
You can download the list to your phone/computer to print or take a screenshot. We’d recommend sticking it to your fridge or near your recycling bin to remind yourself to save any jars that could be useful.

Finding the right tools

If you don’t have all the necessary tools, try seeing when your closest Men’s Shed is open or a similar tool sharing community.

What can you do with a planter?

The planter you’ll make will be a great gift for someone. Have a think who that could be and how you could personalise it for them. Writing their name on it could be a great way! Will put some plants in it already or leave the jars empty? Plan ahead and remember to add any supplies you need to the list.

Remember to check-in

We asked you to check-in at the start of the challenge to measure your progress over the coming weeks. We noticed you haven't yet had time to check-in, it will take less than 2 minutes!
