Caring for your seedlings

Your sunflower seedlings need a little care this week to help them grow strong.

Keep them in a bright spot and give them a little water when needed. If yours have not sprouted yet, don’t worry. There is still time.

If you are growing them indoors, keep them inside for now. Next week, we’ll show you how to get them ready for life outside.

If you started yours outdoors, try to protect them from slugs and other hungry visitors.

Did you know?

The first leaves you see are called seed leaves.

Later, your sunflower will grow true leaves, which are thicker and help the plant turn sunlight into energy.

We recommend keeping your sunflowers inside until next week, when we'll share how to harden them off for life outside. If you grow them outside from the beginning, keep them protected from slugs and other wildlife.

Caring can spread further. This week is also a chance to share a little care with someone else. A sunflower can be a lovely excuse to connect with people nearby.

You could:

  • gift a seedling to a neighbour

  • compare progress with a friend

  • invite someone to grow along with you

  • explore your nearest community garden and meet local growers

If you're curious about how others are growing their sunflowers, we've found your nearest community gardens. Swap tips, share a seedling, or even make a new friend.

Find your local Community Garden here:

There are 100+ community gardens in this map but if none of them is near to you please email us on campaigns@togethertv.com and we'll help you find one nearby!

Send us your sunflower

You can still enter our prize draw to win a 43” Freely TV by sending us your coloured-in sunflower from the Together TV Times. Your photo could also be added to our gallery.

Keep going

Remember to keep using the watering tips Danny and Fran shared last week. We can’t wait to see how your sunflowers are getting on.
